Calgary, Ep. 6
October 10, 2018 — In our annual appearance at Wordfest, Literary Death Match returned for a lit-fueled night of words and the absurd in a brilliant battle that ended with Joshua Whitehead toppling Benjamin Hertwig in a crackling Arithme-Lit finish, winning Whitehead the LDM Calgary, Ep. 6 crown and literary immortality to go with it.

Literary Merit: Patrick Weekes, author of Rogues of Republic series and Feeder, and writer at EA BioWare
Performance: Jordan Tannahill, author of Declarations and Governor General’s Award for Drama-winning playwright
Intangibles: Alice Kuipers, best-selling author of eight books who has won or been shortlisted for these prizes: the Carnegie Medal, the White Pine Award, the Grand Prix de Viarmes, and the Saskatchewan First Book Award

Round 1:
* Joshua Whitehead, author of full-metal indigiqueer and Jonny Appleseed, and winner of the Governor General’s History Award for the Indigenous Arts and Stories Challenge in 2016
* Ali Bryan, author of The Figgs and Roost, which won the Georges Bugnet Award for Fiction and was the official selection of One Book Nova Scotia
Round 2:
* Benjamin Hertwig, a National Magazine Award-winning writer, painter and ceramicist, his first book of poetry, Slow War, was a finalist for the Governor General’s Literary Awards
