Miami, Ep. 12

November 19, 2022 — To close out LDM's fantastic year, we teamed with the always-fantastic Miami Book Fair, for an evening of wonder on their Off the Shelf Stage that saw Yaffa S. Santos narrowly topple GennaRose Nethercott in a Repeat After Me finale, winning Santos the LDM Miami, Ep. 12 crown, and literary immortality to go with it. 

Here's the full lineup from the brilliant night: 

JUDGES: 
Literary Merit: Tananarive Due, an American Book Award, NAACP Image Award, and British Fantasy Award-winning author who teaches Black Horror and Afrofuturism at UCLA, she's executive producer on Shudder's documentary Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror; and co-wrote both "A Small Town" for Season 2 of Jordan Peele’s "The Twilight Zone" and the Black Horror graphic novel The Keeper

Performance: George O'Connor, author, illustrator and cartoonist and the author of the New York Times-best-selling OLYMPIANS, an ongoing series retelling the classic Greek myths in comics form

Intangibles: Jonathan Ames, author of 10 novels, including The Extra ManYou Were Never Really Here (adapted into the acclaimed film starring Joaquin Phoenix), and the all-new The Wheel of Doll. He's the creator of two TV series: Blunt Talk and Bored to Death, and has had two amateur boxing matches, fighting as "The Herring Wonder."

* GennaRose Nethercott, author of the novel Thistlefoot and The Lumberjack’s Dove, selected by Louise Glück as a winner of the National Poetry Series. Her other recent projects include the narrative song collection Modern Ballads, and Lianna Fled the Cranberry Bog: A Story in Cootie Catchers 

* Jamil Jan Kochai, a multi-award winning author of the all-new story collection The Haunting of Hajji Hotak and Other Stories and 99 Nights in Logar, a finalist for the Pen/Hemingway Award for Debut Novel and the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature. His stories have appeared in The New Yorker, Zoetrope, The Best American Short Stories and beyond

* Colin Barrett, winner of the Penguin Ireland Prize, he's the author of Homesickness and Young Skins, winner of the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award, the Guardian First Book Award, and the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature. His work has been published in The New Yorker, A Public Space and in 2015, he was named a National Book Foundation “5 Under 35”

* Yaffa S. Santos, author of the all-new A Touch of Moonlight and A Taste Of Sage, winner of an International Latino Book Award and named an Indie Next List and Amazon Editor’s Pick
